History

Houston County was the first county created by the Republic of Texas, established from Nacogdoches County on June 12, 1837, and named for President Sam Houston, who signed the order. Its original territory included land later organized into Trinity, Anderson, and part of Henderson counties. Crockett became the county seat on land donated by Andrew E. Gossett, who named the town for his father's friend David Crockett.
