History
This Houston County marker honors Captain George English (1808-1876), a Tennessee-born soldier and lawman who served as first sheriff of the Ayish Bayou District under Mexican rule in 1827. He fought at the siege of Bexar in December 1835, later volunteered in the Mexican War, and, though an opponent of secession, organized a Confederate cavalry company during the Civil War. He moved to Houston County around 1843, and the state erected the marker in 1936.
