History
Hadan Cemetery, also recorded as the Old Plantation or Hutchings-Alston-Haden family cemetery, lies on the grounds of the Eastham Prison Farm in southern Houston County and predates the prison itself. The Eastham family acquired the roughly 12,790-acre plantation in 1891 and soon leased it to the Texas prison system; the Eastham Unit, the state's first maximum-security prison, opened on the site in April 1917. The cemetery preserves the burials of families who lived and farmed the land before it became a state prison farm.
