History

John Sheridan was an early landowner in the Augusta community of northern Houston County. After his death, his widow Lucinda C. Sheridan (1808-1862) donated four acres for the adjoining Augusta Cemetery, which has been in continuous use since the 1850s and whose earliest documented grave dates to 1854. A historical marker to John and Lucinda Sheridan stands near the cemetery.
