History

The Central National Road of the Republic of Texas was authorized by an act of the Texas Congress in 1844 and surveyed by George W. Stell. Running roughly 130 miles from the Trinity River in Dallas County to the Red River, the thirty-foot-wide route passed through Lamar, Fannin, Hunt, Collin, and Rockwall counties. A granite marker recording the road near Greenville was placed in 1926 by the Thomas Wynne Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
