History
Hunt County was created on April 11, 1846 from parts of Fannin and Nacogdoches counties and named for Memucan Hunt Jr., a Republic of Texas secretary of the navy. Greenville, named for Republic general Thomas Jefferson Green, was chosen as county seat; early court sessions were held under oak trees and in an 1847 log-cabin courthouse before a succession of buildings led to the present courthouse begun in 1928.
