History

This burial ground is associated with Plemons, a Hutchinson County ghost town that James Andrew Whittenburg helped establish in 1901 on donated homestead land and that served as the county seat until the government moved to Stinnett in 1926. After the railroad bypassed the town it faded away, leaving little behind but its cemetery. A small cluster of children's graves there, some marking twins, reflects local accounts of an epidemic that took several of the community's young, and the site is remembered as the Plemons 'baby' cemetery.
