History

Mertzon Cemetery covers about ten acres a short distance west of Mertzon, the seat of Irion County. Its first recorded burial took place on May 15, 1910, not long after the town was founded along the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway and named for San Angelo banker M. L. Mertz. Mertzon later won the county-seat election over nearby Sherwood in 1936.
