History
Fort Richardson, named for Union General Israel B. Richardson, was active from 1867 to 1878 as the northernmost U.S. Army post in Texas along the military road to Fort Sill. By 1872, with 666 officers and men, it was listed as the largest army installation in the country, and troops from the fort helped end the Red River War at the 1874 Battle of Palo Duro Canyon. Declared a state historic site in 1963 and a National Historic Landmark, it preserves seven restored original buildings.
