History

Cordele Cemetery is the burial ground for the farming community of Cordele in northeastern Jackson County, which formed after the New York and Texas Land Company sold tracts along Brushy (Sandy) Creek to settlers beginning in 1897. The town took its name from the Georgia hometown of Dr. Stapleton, its first postmaster. Cordele's population rose and fell over the decades, and the cemetery preserves the graves of its early families.
