History

Byerly Campground Cemetery grew out of a Methodist camp-meeting ground established by Adam Byerly, who came to Texas from South Carolina in 1833 and received a Mexican land grant in 1835. Byerly invited the pioneer Methodist missionary Rev. Henry Stephenson to preach under a brush arbor on his land, beginning camp meetings where pioneer families gathered for days to worship and socialize. The cemetery, about five miles west of Jasper near the old Camp Ground School, is recognized with a Texas historical marker.
