History
The Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum, on the Lamar University campus in Beaumont, recreates the boomtown that sprang up after oil was discovered at Spindletop Hill on January 10, 1901. The Lucas Gusher, found at about 1,139 feet, blew oil more than 100 feet into the air and marked the birth of the modern petroleum industry. The museum opened in 1976 with clapboard buildings modeled on the original Gladys City structures and a replica wooden derrick, and Lamar University owns and operates the site.
