History

Methodism reached the Cleburne area in the 1850s through camp meetings and early services, and around 1869, two years after the town's founding, Mr. and Mrs. B. J. Chambers donated lots for a Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Portions of that first building were later moved and rebuilt at Main and Brown streets in 1902 as Main Street Methodist Church. The congregation relocated to Westhill Drive and Colonial Avenue in 1966, adopted the name First United Methodist Church, and rebuilt after a 1976 fire; the marker was placed in 2009.
