History

The No. 1 British Flying Training School Museum in Terrell commemorates a Royal Air Force pilot-training school established in 1941, before the United States entered World War II, with strong support from the local citizenry. Terrell hosted the first and largest of six civilian-run British flying schools in the southern United States; during the war it trained about 2,200 RAF cadets and 138 U.S. Army Air Forces cadets in a 20-week program of flight instruction and ground school under the motto 'the seas divide, but the skies unite.' The museum opened in 2002 and holds the most extensive surviving archive of the No. 1 BFTS, including log books, uniforms, and wartime memorabilia.
