History

Camp Verde was a U.S. Army post established on July 8, 1856 in Kerr County that served as headquarters for the Army's experimental Camel Corps, which tested dromedaries as pack animals across the Southwest. Confederate troops seized the post and more than eighty camels in February 1861, and the Army abandoned Camp Verde in 1869. The surviving barracks, a composite of original structures, was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1962.
