History

Copperas Creek Cemetery lies in western Kimble County near Roosevelt, in the valley where Nick and Jennie Coalson settled at the junction of the East and West Copperas creeks in 1866. One acre for the cemetery was deeded by D. P. Cowsert to the county judge in 1890, though the first burial, William A. Cowsert, had already taken place in 1888. At least eight Civil War veterans rest here, and a law-officer marker honors Texas Ranger Captain Gully Cowsert.
