History

Dumont Cemetery serves the small community of Dumont in the northwestern corner of King County, about 100 miles east of Lubbock. The settlement was named for A. Dumont, an early postmaster at nearby Paducah; its first school met in a dugout in 1891, the China Grove School followed in 1893, and a post office opened in 1894. By 1896 Dumont had three churches and about fifty residents, in a ranching region that includes the Four Sixes, SMS, and Matador ranches.
