History

Vattman Cemetery serves the small Catholic farming settlement of Vattman, about sixteen miles southeast of Kingsville near Riviera in southern Kleberg County. The community and its cemetery are named for Father Edward J. Vattmann of the Catholic Colonization Society of America, whom land developer Theodore F. Koch recruited around 1907 to help settle Catholic families on former King Ranch land. The burial ground is tied to the parish of Our Lady of Consolation, the congregation that grew out of that colonization effort.
