History

This burial ground is tied to the Lavaca County poor farm, land the county commissioners acquired in 1891 to house and employ its indigent residents, who worked the property's fields and gardens to repay their lodging. The county home operated until 1958, when it closed following the spread of Social Security. Residents who died there were buried on the grounds, and many of the graves are unmarked.
