History
The Texas Wendish Heritage Museum sits on the original 1854 Wendish settlement grounds at Serbin, near Giddings, where about 600 Wends-Slavic Lutherans from Lusatia in eastern Germany-settled 4,000 acres in search of religious freedom. A group of Wendish women founded the Texas Wendish Heritage Society in 1972 and established the museum in 1979, and it remains the only Wendish museum outside Germany. Highlights include a traditional black wedding dress, a Wendish bagpipe (dudelsack), and decorated Easter eggs.
