History

Edward Bradford Pickett (1823-1882), a Virginia-born attorney, settled in Liberty, Texas, in 1850 and built a legal and political career across southeast Texas. He served in the Texas House and, during the Civil War, rose to lieutenant colonel in the Confederate army, seeing further service after being captured at Arkansas Post and exchanged. Elected to the state Senate in 1869, he presided over the Constitutional Convention of 1875 and became the first president of the board of directors of the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, a post he held until his death in Liberty in 1882.
