History

John Karner (1816-1901), born in Bavaria near the Rhine, came to Texas in 1836 and served first as a teamster and then as a regular soldier, earning a donation certificate for 640 acres for his participation at San Jacinto. He married Mary Elizabeth Love at Tehuacana, and the couple is buried in marked graves in the cemetery at Mexia, Limestone County.
