History
The Caviel Museum of African American History occupies the former Caviel's Pharmacy in the East Lubbock 'Flats' neighborhood, where Alfred and Billie Caviel—the first African American husband-and-wife pair in the United States to own and operate their own pharmacy—served the community from 1960 to 2009. The Caviels donated the building to the Roots Historical Arts Council in 2011, and it opened in 2015 as the first African American museum in West Texas. Its exhibits document African American medical practice, education, and community life.
