History

Elwood Cemetery near Midway in Madison County took shape after the family of prominent settler and Civil War veteran James Blair Durham donated four acres to the Elwood Methodist Church in 1874 for cemetery, church, and school use. The first recorded burial was that of Amzie Durham, son of James and Keziah Durham, in 1875. The surrounding Elwood community had been a thriving settlement since the mid-1850s.
