History

Antioch Cemetery adjoins the Old Antioch Church of Christ near Midway in Madison County, a congregation believed to be among the oldest independent African American churches in Texas. Organized on the Hayes Plantation and named for the biblical city of Antioch, the church moved off the plantation in 1865 and relocated to Midway, where its building also served as a school. The Texas Historical Commission recognized the site with a marker in 1999.
