History

Construction of this Romanesque Revival building in Jefferson began in 1888 and was completed by 1890, with a post office on the first floor and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas on the second. It served the federal court until 1964, and the Jefferson Historical Society acquired it as a museum in 1965. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969.
