History

Captain William Perry was among the first settlers of the riverport town of Jefferson, arriving about 1840. Through his shipping business and work dredging a turning basin on Big Cypress Bayou, he helped establish the town as an inland port, and he served as mayor in 1863-1864. He was fatally shot in 1869 and is buried in Jefferson's Oakwood Cemetery.
