History

Monterey Cemetery serves the old community of Monterey in far northeastern Marion County near the Louisiana line. The settlement grew up within the former Neutral Ground during the 1840s, when it was a haven for fugitives, and had organized a Masonic lodge by 1848; a post office called Point Monterey operated from 1851 to 1867.
