History

Grit Cemetery serves the small farming community of Grit, about six miles northwest of Mason, which was settled by cotton growers around 1889 and named for its gritty soil after the preferred name Funston proved already taken. The community grew a post office (1901), a cotton gin, a school (1908), and a Baptist church, and its cemetery holds close to 300 graves.
