History
Christ Episcopal Church in Matagorda is the oldest Episcopal parish in Texas, tracing its congregation to 1838 when the Rev. Caleb S. Ives organized worship in the town's Masonic Lodge. A prefabricated frame church shipped from New York was raised in 1841 but destroyed by the hurricane of 1854; the present building was erected in 1856 about 400 yards west, reusing salvaged elements such as the altar, communion rail, and pews. The church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012.
