History

The Matagorda County Museum occupies Bay City's Neoclassical former post office, built in 1912 and later used for town meetings, a WWII Selective Service board, and a fallout and hurricane shelter; the museum association bought it in 1990. Exhibits cover early Texas exploration and regional ranching and farming. Its signature collection features artifacts from La Belle, the ship of French explorer Rene-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, that sank in Matagorda Bay in 1686.
