History

Ashby Cemetery originated with a two-acre tract donated by Civil War veteran W. W. Moore for a Methodist church and burial ground in the Ashby community of Matagorda County, which Moore named for his commanding officer in the Eighth Texas Cavalry. The Ashby Methodist church once counted as many as 100 members before it was destroyed by fire in 1902, and the cemetery remains from the early community.
