History

The McDermott Motors Building at 1125 Washington Avenue in Waco opened in 1928 as a Buick dealership for Wilford Dees McDermott, who commissioned architect Milton Scott to design it in the Spanish Colonial Revival style with a red tile roof and miniature corner brick towers. After the Depression hurt the business, McDermott leased the building to Waco's National Guard unit, which briefly renamed it Fort Fiske Wright in 1931. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.
