History
The Texas Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1951 by the Texas Sports Writers Association, making Texas the first state to honor its athletes with such a hall; baseball great Tris Speaker was the inaugural inductee. After an earlier Grand Prairie facility opened in 1981 and closed in 1986, the hall reopened in Waco with a grand opening on April 16, 1993. Today it displays more than 6,000 pieces of memorabilia and also houses the Texas Tennis and Texas High School Football halls of fame.
