History

This Waco marker honors Georgia Jenkins Burleson (1833-1924), wife of Baylor University president Rufus C. Burleson and an advocate for women's education. She served as matron of the women's dormitory later named Burleson Hall, where residents received instruction in academics as well as social conduct and where several women's literary societies met. The Texas Historical Commission erected the marker in 2009 near Burleson Hall in the Burleson Quadrangle.
