History

Gerald Cemetery lies about eleven miles northeast of Waco on FM 308, the main surviving remnant of Gerald, a nineteenth-century German settlement that once had a post office, cotton gin, and general store before the community shifted to nearby Leroy with the coming of the railroad. Today only the cemetery and St. Paul's United Church of Christ remain. The oldest headstone dates to 1874, and many of the roughly three acres of markers, bearing family names such as Leuschner, Lander, Drews, and Schuetz, are inscribed in German.
