History
Built in 1911-1912 by the Medina Irrigation Company, the Medina Dam was, when completed in 1913, the largest hydraulic engineering project west of the Mississippi River and the fourth-largest dam in the United States. The project was designed and financed by American engineer Dr. Frederick Stark Pearson with British financial backing. The dam still provides irrigation water to more than 34,000 acres of farmland around Castroville. It was designated a state historical landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
