History
This stone-and-stucco residence northwest of Castroville was built in 1846 for Charles de Montel, an important figure in the town's founding. De Montel was present at the establishment of Castroville on September 3, 1844, served as the first county clerk of Medina County, and was among the petitioners for the community's first public school. The house reflects the European architectural traditions of Castroville's French Alsatian colonists and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
