History

The Medina County Museum in Hondo occupies the town's former Southern Pacific Railway depot, built in 1893, where original fixtures such as the freight scale and telegraph set survive and trains still pass daily. Its more than 2,000 items portray the county's frontier beginnings from before its 1848 founding, with family portraits, clothing, furniture, and household goods of early settlers. Outdoor exhibits include a 1964 Southern Pacific caboose, a 1913 steam engine from the D'Hanis brick factory, and early farm equipment.
