History

Hext Cemetery serves the community of Hext in eastern Menard County, about sixteen miles southeast of Menard at the junction of State Highway 29 and Farm Road 1221. The settlement was known as Marengo when it was settled in the 1870s but was renamed in the late 1890s in honor of Joseph Robert Hext, and a post office opened there in 1897. By 1914 Hext had a cotton gin, a hotel, two general stores, and about 125 residents, with Church of Christ and Baptist congregations organized in 1904 and 1916.
