History

German immigrants founded the Bushdale farming community in northwestern Milam County in the 1870s, and a community cemetery was established on land owned by John and Johanna Broeckl in 1878. The settlement grew to include a schoolhouse that doubled as a church, Peace Lutheran Church (organized 1883), a store, cotton gin, and blacksmith shop. After the church moved to Rockdale in 1909 and the school closed in 1949, the cemetery became the community's only remnant.
