History

St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery grew from the German Lutheran settlement of Thorndale, which began in 1881 when the August Polnick family—the area's first Lutherans—arrived from Lee County. In 1890 Karl Michalk donated ten acres for a church, school, and cemetery; the church was dedicated in 1891, the same year the cemetery's first burial, the infant son of Ida Schultz, took place. Services were conducted in German into the World War I era, and the congregation grew to several hundred members by the early twentieth century.
