History

A Cumberland Presbyterian congregation was organized in the Bowie area of Montague County in the late nineteenth century, part of a denomination that spread widely across North Texas frontier communities. In 1906 many Cumberland Presbyterian churches reunited with the larger Presbyterian Church in the United States of America. The congregation's lineage continues today in the United Presbyterian Church of Montague County, which observed its 149th anniversary in 2025.
