History

Belcherville Cemetery serves the ghost town of Belcherville in northwestern Montague County, about fifteen miles northwest of Montague. First known simply as Belcher for ranchers John and Alex Belcher, the place became a town in 1887 when the family platted a townsite in anticipation of the Gainesville, Henrietta and Western Railway. It boomed briefly as a cattle- and cotton-shipping point, was incorporated by 1893, then declined after fires and the loss of the railroad and gave up its charter in 1908. The cemetery, with several hundred graves, is one of the chief reminders of the vanished town.
