History

Old Spanish Fort Cemetery lies at Spanish Fort in far northern Montague County, near the Red River. The site takes its name from ruins and artifacts that Anglo settlers found there—remnants not of a Spanish fort but of a fortified Taovaya (Wichita) Indian village occupied in the mid-1700s and abandoned by the 1840s after smallpox epidemics and encroachment. The old cemetery holds the graves of the later Anglo settlers who farmed the area; a separate 'new' Spanish Fort cemetery was opened nearby in 1939.
