History

The Old Nacogdoches University Building is the only surviving structure in Texas built for a university chartered during the days of the Republic of Texas, which established Nacogdoches University in 1845. The two-story Greek Revival brick building was erected in 1858 and served as a Confederate hospital during the Civil War and later as Nacogdoches public schools into the 1930s. Restored beginning in 1960 and operated by the Nacogdoches Federation of Women's Clubs, its upper floor houses a museum on the building's history; a National Register property, it is often called the 'mother of education in Texas.'
