History

The Pioneer City County Museum in Sweetwater is a historic house museum serving the city and Nolan County, housed in the Ragland House, a residence built in 1906. The Nolan County Historical Society began collecting artifacts in 1967, and after moving among several locations, received the Ragland House as a 1975 donation from Robert A. Ragland; the restored home opened as the Pioneer Museum on July 4, 1976, in a ceremony also marking the nation's Bicentennial, and earned a Texas Historical Commission medallion in 1979. Its dozen-plus rooms retell county history from pioneer days through the oil boom with photographs, ranching implements, and Native American artifacts.
