History
The Britton-Evans House, long known as Centennial House, is the oldest surviving building in Corpus Christi, completed in 1849 by Virginia-born Captain Forbes Britton on land bought from city founder Henry L. Kinney. Built of shellcrete (lime, oyster shell, and sand) with eighteen-inch walls in the Texas Greek Revival style, the two-story house served as a hospital for Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. Renamed Centennial House in 1949, it has operated as a historic house museum under the Corpus Christi Area Heritage Society since 1965.
