History
Established in 1845 on land donated by Corpus Christi founder Col. Henry L. Kinney, Old Bayview is regarded as the oldest federal military cemetery in Texas. Its first burials came after the steamer Dayton's boiler exploded on September 13, 1845, killing several of Zachary Taylor's soldiers stationed here on the eve of the Mexican-American War. After the army left in 1846 it became the community burial ground and holds veterans of conflicts from the War of 1812 through the Civil War. The site is a designated Historic Texas Cemetery and State Archeological Landmark and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2020.
