History

Waka Cemetery is the community burial ground for Waka, a small farming town in west-central Ochiltree County in the Texas Panhandle. The settlement was founded by German immigrants about 1885 as Wawaka and took its present name after residents relocated to a nearby Panhandle and Santa Fe Railway stop around 1921. The cemetery lies on the east side of town and holds fewer than forty documented graves, reflecting Waka's tiny population, which had fallen to roughly fifty by the 21st century.
